England and Welsh Drawn Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their infamous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa until the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the groups play out according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six group winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
