A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in public projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
