The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible with a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
